📐 Chord Shapes
e|---0--- B|---3--- G|---1--- D|---0--- A|---2--- E|---0---
The classic stop chord - dissonant and powerful
e|------- B|------- G|------- D|---5--- A|---5--- E|---3---
Low and punchy for stop hits
X = mute all strings Use palm and fingers to stop all ringing
The most important "chord" - silence!
🎼 Rhythm Patterns
Full Stop Pattern
Hit on 1, full stop, silence until next measure
Staccato Hits
Short, punchy hits with silence between
Build and Stop
Gradual build to complete silence
🎯 Practice Exercises
Exercise 1: The Clean Stop
Play a chord for 3 beats, then stop ALL sound on beat 4. Use your palm and fingers to mute every string instantly. The silence should be as sudden as a light switch. Practice with each chord.
Instant muting technique|No string ring after stop|Maintaining tempo through silence
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Gradual fade instead of stop|Some strings still ringing|Rushing to next chord
Exercise 2: Count Through Silence
Pattern: Play 2 measures, stop for 2 measures, repeat. Count OUT LOUD during the silence: “1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4”. Your internal clock must keep perfect time. No visual cues allowed.
Perfect time through silence|Confident re-entry|No tempo drift
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Speeding up during silence|Coming in early or late|Relying on visual metronome
Exercise 3: Staccato Training
Play ultra-short hits – like drum hits on guitar. Chord sounds for 1/16th note, then mute. “Chk! (silence) Chk! (silence)”. Focus on the silence being longer than the sound.
Super short, punchy hits|Consistent hit length|Clean silence between hits
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Hits too long (not staccato)|Uneven hit timing|Weak attack on the hit
Exercise 4: Dynamic Stops
Practice stops at different volumes. Loud hit → stop. Medium hit → stop. Whisper hit → stop. The stop technique is the same regardless of volume. The contrast makes the stop more effective.
Same stop quality at all volumes|Clear dynamic differences|No accidental sounds when quiet
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Stop technique changing with volume|Unclear dynamic levels|Noise during quiet stops
Exercise 5: Band Simulation
Play with a drum loop or backing track. Practice these cues: “1-2-3-STOP!” “And 1!” “Break!” Make the stops so clean that you could hear a pin drop. Then come back in with perfect timing and energy.
Studio-quality stops|Perfect synchronization with track|Confident re-entries
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Anticipating or dragging stops|Losing place in the form|Weak energy on re-entry

🎸 Band Lab (15-30 min)
Time to put it all together with your band!
Everyone:
Stops only work if EVERYONE stops together. Practice with a count-in: “1-2-3-STOP!” All instruments must cut simultaneously. Even 10ms off ruins it.
Visual Cues:
Guitarist often gives the cue – a guitar neck lift, a foot stomp, or head nod. Practice your cue!
🔧 Gear Tip
Practice left-hand release + right-hand edge-mute for silent stops (no ring-over).
